Location
The capital of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Porto Alegre is located in a strategic point for Mercosur. It is situated at equal distance to Buenos Aires and Montevideo, as well as to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The city has an excellent hotel network, modern shopping malls, theaters, universities and a range of restaurants offering international cuisine. The climate in Porto Alegre is considered subtropical, meaning the weather can change quickly and unexpectedly. The city has four well-defined seasons. Summers are very hot and winters can get very cold. In the fall, days are shorter and the temperature becomes milder, bringing some days of chilly weather.
Description
Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) was founded in 1948 and is considered to be one of the best universities in Brazil today. It is situated in Porto Alegre, the southernmost capital of Brazil. PUCRS is a comprehensive university that enrolls approximately 30,000 students. Students can take classes in any undergraduate program offered by the departments.
The University offers a complete infrastructure for teaching, research and extension, which includes laboratories and centers for research, culture, environmental conservation and technology, a distinguished interdisciplinary complex, a distance education department, as well as specialized student services. The modern campus area offers impressive facilities such as restaurants, banks, post office, beauty salon, drug stores, book and clothing stores, a travel agency and a gym, to name a few services.





Subject area restrictions
All fields except medicine and clinical practice are available to exchange students.
It's not possible to go to this university on an exchange after you have completed your studies.

Credit point conversion
Course load per semester: 24 credit points is equivalent 30 hp.
(4 creditos=5 hp, 24 creditos=30 hp) Note: PUCRS publishes its courses in hours, where 30h = 2 credits.
Semester dates
Autumn Semester: August - December
Spring Semester: March - July
Orientation seminars are mandatory. The sessions occur on the 2 days that precede the beginning of the academic semester.
PLEASE NOTE: Full-year exchanges are only possible if the exchange starts in the spring as the academic year starts in the spring. Students applying for an the exchange starting in the fall semester can only apply for a 1-semester exchange.

Teaching language
Portuguese and English. Please note that the number of courses available in English is limited and that the student must be very flexible with course choices.  

General language requirements
A good command of English is recommended. If students wish to take courses in Portuguese, a minimum of B1 in the Portuguese language (according to the Common European Framework of Languages) is required.

The University does not offer accommodation for students. Each student is responsible for arranging housing on their own, however PUCRS is affiliated with Housing Anywhere to help students in their search for housing.
